Word Problems

Just last week, I was sitting in class
Learning one plus two is three
But then our math teacher turned the page
Now there are new problems looking at me
Instead of one plus one plus one is three
Or two times two is four
This next chapter is full of words
I’ve never seen questions like these before

Like if Gordon has a dozen eggs
And Guy has a dozen more
Would their total be 20 eggs,
32, or 24?
Or if Brian brings 13 apples to class
And Victor brings a bunch
How many apples would Victor need to have
So everyone could have one with lunch?

I’ve got word problems in my class
They’re not the same ones I had in the past
Should I multiply that number by two?
Word problems – what can I do?
Word problems – I need a cure
What do I have to do? I’m not sure
Do I add it up, subtract, or divide?
I’ve got word problems on my mind

If a building’s height is 132
With 12 stories – all the same
What is the height of each story?
And how tall are the first three?
Hank’s land measures 60 by 30
And the rest of the block is Lenore’s
If the total area of the block is 3000
Does Hank have less or more than Lenore?

I’ve got word problems in my class
They’re not the same ones I had in the past
Should I multiply that number by two?
Word problems – what can I do?
Word problems – I need a cure
What do I have to do? I’m not sure
Do I add it up, subtract, or divide?
I’ve got word problems on my mind

Ana has two cats
And Melissa has a dog
Darcy has a couple ponies
And Jackson has a hog
Kiley has three ring-tailed lemurs
And Keagan has a duck
If Drake were to take away all the mammals
I think that they’d be left with just one

I’ve got word problems in my class
They’re not the same ones I had in the past
Should I multiply that number by two?
Word problems – what can I do?
Word problems – I need a cure
What do I have to do? I’m not sure
Do I add it up, subtract, or divide?
I’ve got word problems on my mind
