Telephone

Last week, my daddy said to me
I’ve got something special that I’m gonna need you to deliver
If Mommy calls you on the telephone
Here is the message that I need to have you give her

We’re fine here
Things are going well
We’ll pick you up
When your train comes in
‘Til then
We miss you lots
Lots of love
And hugs and kisses

Pass along the message on the telephone

The very next day, my telephone rang
And my grandpa, Sam, was on the other end of the line
I said, “hello,” he said, “hello, how are you doing?”
So I told him that I miss my mom but that I’m doing fine
Then I remembered what my daddy said to me
And I told my grandpa what my daddy wanted delivered
If my mommy calls you on the telephone
Here is the message that I need to have you give her

We’re fine here
Things are going well
We’ll pick her up
When her train comes in
‘Til then
We miss her lots
Lots of love
And bring us candy

My grandpa got a phone call from my cousin, Valerie
She told him all about her first day of kindergarten
She made a lot of friends, played with crayons, and painted pictures
He congratulated her because her big girl days were startin’
Then he told her that he had recently spoken to me
And he told her all about what my daddy wanted delivered
So if his mom calls you up on the telephone
Here is the message Alex needs to have you give her

They’re fine there
But there’s a funny smell
They’ll pick her up
When her plane comes in
From eight ’til ten
They’ll pet the cats
Lots of gum
Is fine and dandy

Pass along the message on the telephone

From Valerie, the message went to Uncle Eric
And then Uncle Eric passed the message on to my Aunt Toni
Who called my cousin, Hadley, up and sent the message on to her
Then Hadley passed the message on to all of the Maloneys
So Darcy, Jackson, Matt, and Jenna passed the message on and on
And on the message went ’til it was heard by everybody else
But every time it went around it changed a little more until
The message came to life and started changing by itself

A little nonsense every now and then
Can pick you up when the cake is down
From there to here, here to there, and everywhere
King Philip came over for green spaghetti
Why is a raven like a writing desk?
Enjoy the present condition and do enjoyable life
It’s Sunday morning, I’m coming home today
I wanna sing – purple monkey dishwasher

Today, my mommy came home from her trip
So my daddy and I went to pick up Mommy from the station
When I saw Mommy come up from the platform escalator
I ran to her and hugged and kissed her without hesitation
Then Mommy told us of the strangest message she received
When she checked the voicemail on her telephone the other day
She didn’t know who called her, but she really liked the message
‘Cause it made her feel special, and here is what it said:

Your family
Is doing well at home
They’ll see you soon
At the train station
They love you lots
And miss you too
Just one more thing
They’d like some candy
