Happy Birthday

I got a tape recorder
From my family for my birthday today
I’m so surprised, and it looks really fun
I wasn’t even expecting to get one

I made a rubber band guitar
And a drum kit from some cardboard boxes
I wrote my own favorite songs
Then made a rhyme that doesn’t make any sense

Then I called my local radio station
To request my songs on heavy rotation
They turned me down with no explanation
But at least I’ve got imagination – 1, 2, 3, 4!

Ladies and gentlemen! Boys and girls!
All characters real and imaginary!
Welcome to the historic Wonderland Theatre
Centrally located in the heart of Alex’s imagination.

I’d like to take this opportunity to personally thank each
And every one of you for coming to our performance tonight
So prepare yourselves for an evening of mirth and merriment
The likes of which will amuse, astound, and amaze
The young, the old, the middle, the ‘tween
The dark and the light
The unheard, the unseen

I got a tape recorder
From my family for my birthday that day
It’s lots of fun, and sure enough
I’m still making my own creative stuff

I made a record or two
And my latest release is really overdue
I still write my favorite songs
And think of rhymes that still don’t quite feel right

Like a simile wrapped in cliché
I could tell you it blew me away
I guess the only thing that I can say
Is that I’m grateful for my happy birthday
